【English Translation】 I was awakened in the early hours by the deafening sound of rain.
Glancing at the clock, it was still dark outside. Checking the news, I learned that the Japan Meteorological Agency had issued a "Level 4" landslide warning for neighboring Hamura City. In my own Musashimurayama City, a Level 2 heavy rain advisory had been in effect since the previous night, but it was safely lifted by early morning, bringing a sigh of relief.
Nature, however, is truly temperamental. No sooner had the rain stopped than a heatstroke alert was issued for Mizuho Town and Akishima City, and the unforgiving heat bared its fangs. Residents were urged to stay indoors, and cooling shelters, such as Akishima Ensis, were opened in Akishima City.
While scrolling through SNS in my cool room, I could see various dramas unfolding across the five municipalities surrounding Yokota Base. While the "15th Market" at the west exit of Hamura Station brought back the bustle of daily life, information about a lost Shiba Inu was also spreading. Through my smartphone screen, I prayed for the dog's safe return.
People with time on their hands during the Obon holidays were drawn to large malls in search of cool air and entertainment. Many posts showed families enjoying pop-up stores at Aeon Mall Musashimurayama, while around Mori Town in Akishima City, parking lots were full and traffic congestion was reported. Looking toward Fussa City, tourists could be seen enjoying the Base Side Street along Route 16. Everyone is desperately trying to survive this harsh summer in their own way.
My personal highlight of the day was the updates on "Ramen Yamaokaya." The Mizuho branch, which had restricted operations due to the heavy rain, safely resumed normal business, and the Musashimurayama branch is running a campaign giving away original goods. Just imagining that rich, punchy soup made my heat-exhausted stomach suddenly assert itself.
Then came noon. Following the call from Akishima City Hall, I quietly closed my eyes and observed a moment of silence. Today being Memorial Day, I felt the prayers ringing through the peace bell in Fussa City, and the wishes for peace shared on SNS, melting into the sky over Tama.
Fearing the heavy rain, complaining about the extreme heat, worrying about someone else's dog, dreaming of the aroma of ramen, and finally reflecting on the preciousness of peace. It was an ordinary, yet deeply cherished, day of Obon.
